03 May 2007 Holidaymakers advised on DIY breaks
Britons planning on booking a DIY break this bank holiday have been advised to take care to book carefully to ensure their trip doesn't become a disaster.
The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) reports that the advent of broadband internet, increased travel choice and low prices has resulted in a 3.4 per cent rise in Britons opting for DIY holidays, while the figure for those choosing package holidays has dropped by one per cent.
Furthermore, the association reports that 64 per cent of Britons now book their holiday less than three months before they are due to travel.
Mark Tanzer, chief executive of Abta, said: "Prices have never been lower, choice has never been wider and information is easy to come by, but as a result, protecting your money and making sure your holiday is problem-free has become more complicated."
He advised holidaymakers to book with an Abta member when planning a DIY holiday in order to get peace of mind.
Abta notes that its members offer a range of travel services, from flights and cruises to travel insurance and car hire.
