25 March 2008 Holidaymakers 'can stay connected while travelling'
A new service has been launched onboard Emirates flights to allow holidaymakers to remain connected while travelling to emerging destinations.
Emirates has officially launched what it claims is the world's first inflight mobile telephone service.
The AeroMobile system automatically activates once the aircraft reaches 6,000 metres, at which point Emirates cabin crew will announce that passengers' mobile phones can be switched on.
The phones will then receive a free text message from the AeroMobile system which will ask them to switch their phones to silent mode for the benefit of other flyers.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, chairman of Emirates Airline, said: "All seats across our fleet are already equipped with in-seat phones, as well as email and text messaging capabilities via the in-seat entertainment system."
Emirates carried 17.5 million passengers in 2007 and flies to over 100 destinations in six continents.
