31 July 2007 Holidaymakers get haggling tips
Britons are saving millions of pounds every year on holiday by opting to haggle when buying goods abroad, it has been claimed.
Research from AA Insurance reveals that Britons save £3.5 billion a year when haggling on their travels, with 41 per cent of holidaymakers believing a good bit of bartering is an essential component of their trip.
Europe topped the list for the destination Britons were most likely to haggle in, followed by Africa and south-east Asia, with North America, South America and Australasia filling out the list.
Christian Young, director of AA Travel Insurance said: "It's great we're saving so much each year by haggling on our holidays - it shows Brits have got what it takes to bag a bargain and get the best deal possible."
He added that the firm had collaborated with travel expert Craig Doyle to produce a guide to help Britons looking to get the best deals at foreign markets.
In 2004, Lloyds TSB reported that two-thirds of Britons abroad were on the lookout for a tasteful and "chic" souvenir when abroad.
