08 August 2007 Holidaymakers get insurance drinking warning
Britons have been advised to stick to the drink-drive limits when abroad - even if they are not driving - in order to make sure they are protected by their travel insurance policy for any difficulties they may encounter.
American Express Insurance Services warns that holidaymakers may be liable for expensive medical bills if hospital staff ascertain that they are over the limit when admitted for an incident which may have been related to alcohol use.
Joanne Field, marketing manager at the firm, said: "This is the acid test to determine whether an insurer will pay a claim for an accident or injury when the medical staff has advised that its causes have been alcohol related."
The firm notes that travel costs involved in being flown home can range from hundreds of pounds for an unescorted economy seat home from the Mediterranean to thousands of pounds for an air ambulance from the Canary Islands.
Earlier this month, Marks & Spencer reported that 45 per cent of travellers' holiday budget will go on restaurant meals, with seven per cent spent on alcohol.
