03 August 2006 Holidaymakers increasingly turning to technology
Holidaymakers are taking increasing amounts of expensive electronic equipment with them when they travel according to a new survey.
The results of the latest Voice of the Traveller survey, conducted by the Travel Industry Association and Synovate, revealed that 86 per cent of Americans now take their mobile phones away with them when they go on holiday and around a quarter choose to take their laptop computers too.
More than two-thirds of holidaymakers also now travel with digital cameras, around a fifth take a CD player away with them and one in ten an MP3 player or iPod, all of which would be expensive to replace.
"In this day and age of PDAs, digital cameras, wireless and high-speed internet access, travellers can share their experiences and photos as they happen instead of waiting until they return from vacation," senior vice president of research for the Travel Industry Association, Dr. Suzanne Cook, remarked.
According to the research, around ten per cent of those surveyed said they felt they had no choice but to stay connected with their workplace or family, while 18 per cent choose to use email and the internet to contact family, friends and work colleagues whilst on holiday.
A representative sample of 1,500 US adults were questioned for the survey, which was conducted in May.
