06 July 2007 Holidaymakers 'must be honest' about pre-existing conditions
Britons booking their summer holidays have been advised to be honest with their travel insurance provider about any pre-existing medical conditions they are suffering and any medication they are taking.
Pre-existing conditions are the "most important" thing to be straightforward about when purchasing cover, according to Direct Line, the company warning that any travel insurance purchased could otherwise become invalid.
"If you forget to tell us about a very important part of what has happened - if you're taking medication or you are receiving treatment and we don't know - we won't be able to offer you the right cover," said Carmel McCarthy, public relations manager at the firm.
She stressed the importance of disclosing all relevant medical details prior to holidays in the US, where medical bills can be especially high.
Last summer, Which? magazine advised holidaymakers not to purchase cover from their travel operator, warning that such protection can often be expensive and inadequate, with some agents neglecting to ask important questions regarding pre-existing medical conditions.
