23 July 2007 Holidaymakers 'should report crimes when abroad'
Holidaymakers could be risking the validity of their travel insurance by waiting until their return home before reporting any crimes occurring abroad, it has been claimed.
Financial services comparison firm moneysupermarket.com reports that if a crime is not reported within 24 hours, an associated claim can often be rejected.
The company notes that a tenth of Britons will not report theft or other crimes to the local police within 24 hours, while 14 per cent will first call their travel insurance provider instead.
Richard Mason, director of insurance at the company, said: "Don't let your relaxed holiday attitude make you vulnerable to crime; keep vigilant and report a theft within 24 hours."
Travellers are advised to not be nervous about contacting the police and ensure they seek a crime number to give to their insurer, who they should also contact as soon as possible.
In July 2006, Halifax reported that Britons experienced approximately £2.7 billion of theft when abroad in the previous five years.
