18 March 2008 Holidaymakers 'should store valuables in hand luggage'
Britons travelling to emerging destinations such as Asia and the Middle East to enjoy shopping holidays have been given tips on how best to stow their purchases for the return journey.
According to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), holidays to such emerging destinations are popular among holiday shoppers looking for electronic goods.
France Tuke warned holidaymakers that valuable goods purchased while abroad should be taken onboard planes as hand luggage as they may not be safely insured in checked-in luggage.
Abta represents thousands of UK travel agencies and hundreds of tour operations in the British Isles.
"In terms of insurance we would say not to put anything of high value into your checked-in luggage. It's important that you take that in your hand luggage really," Ms Tuke, a spokesperson for Abta, commented.
She noted that Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong are emerging destinations in terms of shopping holidays for electrical goods.
