26 April 2007 Holidaymakers 'should take multiple payment methods abroad'
Britons travelling abroad have been advised to carry a number of payment methods with them in case of theft and other emergencies.
The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) also urged holidaymakers to never let their payment cards out of their sight when abroad and carefully check their statements when they arrive home to protect against fraud.
Sean Tipton, a spokesperson for Abta, warned that while a card provider will replace any missing or stolen cards, this help can come too late to holidaymakers overseas.
"We recommend taking a mixture of travellers cheques, hard currency and a card," he said.
He added that holidaymakers are often more relaxed when overseas, which can prove problematic if cash or cards are misplaced or stolen as a result.
Last year, Direct Line noted that for many Britons a summer holiday can be their largest annual purchase and expressed concern that this experience can be ruined by loss or theft abroad.
