15 March 2007 Holidaymakers urged to travel light
Holidaymakers have been urged to carefully consider what belongings they take with them on their trips in the wake of recently announced plans by airlines to reform their excess-baggage policies.
American Express has advised that holidaymakers should avoid the extra costs involved by not over-packing, while also recommending that items with a high financial or personal value are left safely at home.
The firm adds that the cost of lost valuables abroad can far outweigh any expenses paid for excess luggage.
Joanne Field, marketing manager at the firm, warned that many travellers are unaware of single-item limits and valuables-total limits often applied by their insurance provider.
"We would encourage everyone to be sure they know what they are purchasing when choosing travel insurance and what they are covered for," she said.
Last year, NatWest urged those planning to propose to their partner abroad to take out additional cover on the engagement ring, noting that the cost will often exceed the single-item limit of standard policies.
