07 March 2006 Holidaymakers urged to weigh up travel insurance needs
Holidaymakers should not purchase their travel cover from the same company that they have booked their holiday with, it has been advised.
David Lytle, editorial director of travel information site frommers.com, warned that any coverage offered by a tour operator would cost more than if individual insurance was purchased.
Travellers should weigh up the various factors of their holiday before taking out any cover, Mr Lytle added, as different holidays pose different risks.
People with a medical condition or who are planning an extreme sports holiday should definitely ensure that they are covered by medical and evacuation cover before they go away.
Whether or not tickets are refundable should also be taken into consideration, as budget airline tickets, which have grown enormously in popularity over the past few years, often come with tight restrictions.
Mr Lytle concluded that before taking out any cover people should consider how much they can afford to lose.
With the possibility of natural disasters, delays and cancellations, travellers are encouraged to ensure that their dream holiday does not turn into a nightmare simply by not being covered.
