24 October 2007 Holidaymakers 'want peace on planes'
The majority of holidaymakers heading overseas would not welcome the use of mobile phones on aircraft, it has been reported.
The comment, from Mott MacDonald, comes after communications regulator Ofcom set out proposals to allow airlines to install base stations on their aircraft which would allow for onboard mobile phone services in European airspace.
Laurence Price, director of aviation strategy for the Mott MacDonald Group claimed that if this went ahead, holidaymakers and other travellers may become alienated as "peace, quiet, solitude and tranquillity" on flights are lost.
"Someone bleating into a phone for two hours is not what I want if I'm paying reasonable money to go in one of the better cabins on an aeroplane. So maybe you're going to need quiet areas," he added.
Mr Price continued that it is nice to have a break from mobile phones on aircraft - especially when travelling long-haul.
