02 November 2007 Hong Kong grateful for tourism award
Hong Kong has welcomed the recognition it received from the Guardian in the newspaper's recent travel awards.
For the second year in a row, the city was voted favourite overseas city by readers of the Guardian and the Observer, with the chairman of the Hong Kong tourist board suggesting the award is confirmation of region's attraction.
"The award confirms not only Hong Kong’s enduring appeal, but also our strategy this year to market Hong Kong as a hip and trendy destination to British travellers," said James Tien.
According to the tourist board, the UK is the largest European market for tourists visiting Hong Kong, with 516,495 visitors welcomed last year, a record number.
An increase of more than 20 per cent was seen in visitor numbers in the first nine months of 2007, continuing the trend.
The awards took place at the end of October and were presented at a ceremony in the Spanish city of Seville.
