03 December 2005 Hopes for New Zealand tourism boost
Tourism New Zealand (TNZ), the government-funded marketing organisation, is looking to their government to encourage visitors to the country.
The organisation hopes that an increase in international marketing dollars would boost the number of tourists visiting the region.
At present, TNZ receives $65 million a year from the government for its global tourism efforts, but on average has a budget of roughly $55 million.
It is thought that an increase would enable it to more effectively compete with Australia for visitors, which at present receives $360 million over four years for global tourism from the government.
Fiona Luhrs, chief executive of the Tourism Industry Association, argued: "Tourism new Zealand is run on a fraction of the budgets of competing international destinations which are fast coming up to speed with attractive campaigns of their own."
New Zealand has attracted tourists with its breathtaking scenery and received a further boost after the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed there. For repeat visitors and new tourists to travel to the country, it is hoped that the government will comply with TNZ's request.
