05 September 2006 Hotels urged to look after Brit passports
British passports are being kept in unsecured visible areas, it has been claimed, with difficulties a likely if they are stolen as a result.
Research by HBOS General Insurance Identitycare suggests that 3.7 million British passports are kept in unsecured places, such as hotel pigeonholes.
Many of these passports have been submitted to reception as demanded by hoteliers.
Colin Whitehair, chief executive of HBOS General Insurance Identitycare, has urged hotels to take better care of passports entrusted to them.
"Most of us will have witnessed passports being left in open pigeonholes, but this is no longer an acceptable practice.
"We would certainly like to see international hotels taking the threat of identity theft more seriously by ensuring that all retained passports are locked away in a secure place."
The survey also found that in their hotel rooms 4.8 million holidaymakers keep their passport in a suitcase and 1.2 million put it in an unlocked drawer.
