12 July 2005 Hurricane Dennis hits Florida
Hurricane Dennis has reached the US coastline, and is causing havoc in the states of Florida, Alabama and Mississippi.
All three states have been declared as disaster zones, with 1.4 million people being placed under evacuation orders. Only ten months ago, the same area was hit by Hurricane Ivan.
Some 200,000 homes and offices are reported to have been left without power, although no injuries have been recorded.
The hurricane had a far more devastating effect as it ripped through Cuba and Haiti.
More than 1.5 million Cubans were forced to flee from the path of the hurricane last week, with at least ten people known to have died.
Meanwhile, 22 people are believed to have been killed in Haiti, as Dennis caused flooding and landslides.
The hurricane is unusually strong at such an early stage in the hurricane season, which runs from June 1st to November 30th.
