19 July 2005 Hurricane Emily creates chaos in Cancun
Hurricane Emily has brought strong winds and rain to Mexico, causing havoc for thousands of tourists on the Caribbean coast.
Cancun is one of Mexico's most popular tourist attractions.
Thousands have left the beaches, as hotels along the beach batten down the hatches in preparation.
According to reports, trees and power cables were pulled down in resorts such as Playa del Carmen, Tulum, the island of Cozumel and Cancun.
"We're not going to sleep tonight," said Cancun Mayor Francisco Alor.
Thousands of tourists have been moved further inland by bus, to temporary shelters such as schools, gymnasiums and convention centres.
Mexico's Tourism Secretary Gabriela Rodriguez said that 85,000 people from the Yucatan Peninsula would have to be moved.
Cancun's international airport was closed down on Sunday evening, as many tourists unsuccessfully attempted to fly out before the bad weather arrived.
The hurricane has already caused four fatalities in Jamaica, while the Cayman Islands escaped serious damage.
