20 September 2005 Hurricane could hit Florida Keys
A hurricane warning has been issued for all of the Florida Keys after Tropical Storm Rita continued on its path towards the area.
Tourists in the region are being advised to evacuate the low-lying chain of islands.
Daniel Brown, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Centre, said: "It does look like that there is the potential for it to become a hurricane, near or just before it reaches the Florida Keys.
"Once it reaches the Gulf, really everybody should pay attention at that point."
A hurricane has sustained winds of 74 mph or more, and Rita is currently reaching a maximum of 50 mph.
It is now the 17th storm that has been named during the hurricane season, making 2005 the fourth-busiest season since records began in 1851.
In May, the Hurricane Centre predicted there would be 12 to 15 tropical storms this year, but now as many as 21 are expected.
