01 August 2007 IATA reports 'strong' half-year passenger growth
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released its statistics for the first six months of 2007.
For the period up till the end of June, international passenger demand grew by 6.3 per cent. In comparison, last year saw a 5.9 per cent growth.
The association reported passenger load factors of 75.7 per cent for the half, up from 75.1 per cent for the first half of 2006, while adding that the challenge to maintain these record figures would become more difficult with the delivery of new aircraft.
Giovanni Bisignani, director general and chief executive officer of the IATA, said: "Strong passenger demand means that record numbers of people are expected to travel."
He added that increased passenger figures make the harmonisation of security measures across international borders essential, noting that the agreement recently signed by the US and EU on this matter marked progress in this regard.
Earlier this month, the IATA welcomed a report from the High Level Group for the Future European Aviation Regulatory Framework recommending the implementation of a Single European Skies policy on the continent.
