22 November 2007 IPS: Standard passports should take 3 weeks
Standard passport applications should be turned around in roughly three weeks, it has been claimed.
According to the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) this time frame applies to situations where the passport application is "straightforward" and all details are properly completed and accompanied by the correct supporting documents, photographs and fee.
"If one of those things wasn't [correct], then obviously it would delay it, but basically
if you use the standard service, provided you've done everything you need to, [it should take no more than] three weeks," a spokesperson for the IPS commented.
The comment comes after it was revealed by the Post Office that one in five Britons do not know when their passport is due to expire.
Following the news, the IPS has urged would-be holidaymakers to avoid booking their holiday until they have received their new passport.
