06 September 2006 Iranian tourism given Syrian boost
Holidaymakers with a desire to journey further than the nearest beach may note with interest that Syria is signing a number of agreements with Iranian companies in order to coordinate parts of the two countries' tourist industries.
The Syrian Arab News Agency (Sana) reports that the country is signing memos with thousands of tourism companies, including 700 promoting religious tourism.
Dr Sadallah Agha al-Qala, Syrian tourism minister, quoted by Sana, said: "The memos allow more than 4,000 Iranian tourism companies to organize integrated tourism trips that include, in addition to religious tourism, other forms of cultural, historical and resorting tourism."
Earlier this month Sana announced that Syria and Iran would establish a company for air transport to allow the countries to provide joint programs for religious tourists.
Tourists with valid visas can visit Iran where they can see the remains of the Persian Empire as well as more modern religious sites.
