11 January 2008 January blues 'prompt booking boom'
Holidaymakers returning to work after the Christmas period have been prompted into a frenzy of holiday booking, it has been reported.
According to alpharooms.com, Monday January 7th saw a record number of holidays booked to sunny destinations.
Popular destinations included Dubai, Penang, Singapore and Cape Town as well as the Balearic Islands and the Spanish costas.
"We believe these record bookings are due to people returning to work and logging onto holiday websites to as a way to escape the postChristmas blues," commented Gareth Hockey, alpharooms.com's online marketing manager.
He added that January is a peak time for booking foreign holidays.
Sainsbury's Bank predicted last month that 12 million Brits would book foreign holidays before the end of February.
