08 August 2006 Kids can spend safely overseas
A third of British families with teenage offspring will see their young charges travel abroad without parental supervision, in the next year, according to a recent study.
The results from Sainsbury's bank show that four out of five of parents, whose 13 to 17-year-olds travel overseas, will give their offspring on average £131 spending money to go with.
In order to ensure their children's cash is safe, however, Sainsbury's Bank is recommending parents consider loading their spending money onto a travellers cheque card.
Travel manager at Sainsbury's Bank, Robert O'May, said: "Previously parents may have had to give their children foreign currency or travellers cheques to take with them when travelling abroad.
"However, the travellers cheque card, which can be used by children from the age of 13, offers parents a more secure alternative to large sums of cash."
Mr O'May added that the card eliminates the fear of overspending, as with a credit card, as it is preloaded to a specific value of the parents' choice, although it can be topped up in an emergency "at a parent's discretion".
The travel money card is a joint venture between Sainsbury's Bank and American Express, supported by the American Express international network.
