26 February 2008 LA 'an emerging destination once again'
Los Angeles is becoming one of the most popular emerging destinations for art lovers, it has been claimed.
The Times reports that the once "stilled heart" of a city is now experiencing vibrant growth with the launch and reopening of a number of cultural hotspots.
Over the past 15 years, millions of dollars have been invested in LA, with highbrow concert halls, stadiums and entertainment zones being constructed, including a $163 million (£84 million) cathedral, nicknamed the Taj Mahoney, the newspaper explains.
"But, above all, you should come for the art," the publication states. "The New York Times has conceded that LA is 'the centre of visual art making' in America, which must have really hurt."
A collection of modern sculpture celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Getty Centre and after a three-year $10 million expansion, the Museum of Latin American Art has reopened its doors.
The Broad Contemporary Arts Museum contains 178 pieces by 28 of the world's top modern artists, the Times adds, warning that such an influx of culture may never happen in one place at one time ever again.
With a population of 3.8 million, Los Angeles is the largest city in California and the second-largest in the US.
