30 December 2005 Landslide claims 30 lives in Yemen
Government officials in Yemen have confirmed that around 30 people are dead and dozens more missing after a landslide shattered the small village of Dhafeer near Sanaa.
Rocks were said to have slid down the mountain face on Wednesday night, destroying many of the mountainside houses below. Thirty houses were completely swept away by the landslide.
Police have sectioned off the area and are now searching for survivors after ten people were rushed to hospital; some with serious injuries.
Yemen, on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, is not prone to landslides, although flooding is common in the country during the spring and summer months.
