05 October 2007 Las Vegas 'popular for weekend breaks'
There is a demand for short weekend breaks to long-haul destinations such as Las Vegas, it has been reported.
According to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), despite concerns over the environmental impact of air travel, people travel to places like Las Vegas and even Cairo for long weekends.
A spokesperson for Abta added that weekend breaks to New York for shopping trips are also popular.
"There has been a market recently for people to go for two weeks and sometimes even less, depending on where it is," she noted.
However, the spokesperson continued that on the whole in the field of responsible tourism people would rather travel to long-haul destinations for longer periods of time as opposed to short breaks.
The spokesperson also queried the comfort of taking a long-haul flight, alighting for a shopping trip before embarking again and flying straight back home.
Abta represents thousands of travel agencies and hundreds of tour operations in Britain.
