16 January 2007 Low-cost airline launches base in Romania
Travellers planning their holiday abroad this summer looking for a budget trip to the new EU member state of Romania may be interested in the opening of an operational base by a low-cost airline in the country's capital Bucharest.
Holidaymakers can fly with Wizz Air, which will open its base at the Bucharest Baneasa Aurel Vlaicu International Airport in May this year.
This move follows Romania's entry into the EU at the turn of the year, along with Bulgaria.
Jozsef Varadi, chief executive officer of Wizz Air, said: "We are very pleased to welcome Romania in the EU.
"Among other important benefits, it frees the country of the regulatory burdens that protected the monopoly of high fare airlines;"
The airline, which flies from and to a number of UK airports, including London-Luton, Bournemouth and Liverpool, already has bases in Budapest, Gdansk, Katowice, Sofia and Warsaw.
Also this week, the company has announced a number of service enhancements to its flights, including priority boarding.
