29 November 2007 Low-cost airlines 'linked to success of regional airports'
The growth of budget airlines is directly linked to the success of regional airports in the UK, it has been claimed.
According to the Airport Operators Association (AOA) the market provided by low-cost airlines has resulted in access being opened up across Europe and the UK.
Meanwhile, a report from the CAA on Air Services at UK Regional Airports released in mid-November revealed that UK regional airports have grown at a faster rate than London airports, handling 42 per cent of passengers at UK airports in 2006.
"The low-cost market has really risen and it's just opened up access to so many places across Europe. It's opened up the UK regions for Europeans to come in and visit us," commented Neil Pakey, deputy chair of the AOA and managing director of Liverpool John Lennon airport.
According to the CAA, annual passengers flying to and from UK regional airports exceeded 100 million for the first time this month.
The CAA notes that the number is almost three times the amount registered in 1990.
