09 August 2005 Man finally flown home after road accident
A young man who suffered serious injuries after a road accident in Portugal has finally been flown home.
Jake Bennett, 25, was on holiday in the Algarve with friends, when he was hit by a car whilst walking home, according to the Ipswich Evening Star.
He was left with a broken leg, broken shoulders and bleeding on the brain, and was rushed to a hospital in Faro.
However, he did not have travel insurance, and was stranded in Portugal, away from his family.
His mother, Maz Pickett, organised a fundraising effort and secured a loan from her bank, and was able to pay £10,000 to have her son airlifted home to Suffolk.
Mrs Pickett is just pleased to have her son back on home soil though: "While Jake is through the worst of his injuries, he is not out of the woods yet."
"It's also too early to say if he will fully recover physically. He could have problems with his left leg in particular, but it's just a waiting game now," she added.
