23 April 2007 Medical cost warning to Brits in the US
Britons taking advantage of the strong pound against the dollar to travel to the US have been warned that despite this preferential exchange rate, the cost of medical treatment in the States is still prohibitively expensive.
American Express notes that simply being in hospital for medical tests can cost up to $20.83 (£10.42) a minute, with the firm reporting one instance of tests totalling $20,000.
Joanne Field, marketing manager at the company, commented that the US is a popular holiday destination for Britons, with recent rises in the value of the pound meaning UK travellers have increased purchasing power when abroad.
"However, if you fall ill in the States, or need emergency medical treatment, it can cost a small fortune if you don not have the right travel insurance cover," she said.
In 2005, Tesco Personal Finance noted that the US has no reciprocal health agreement with the UK.
