22 October 2005 Mexico airports shut down
Tens of thousands of tourists in Mexico are facing difficult times as their travel arrangements are torn to shreds by Hurricane Wilma.
Along the cost of Mexico, five cities have been forced to declare a state of emergency as the hurricane edges ever closer.
All the local airports in Mexico have now been shut down, so the only option left for tourists is to move further inland, and take advantage of the many emergency shelters that have been set up in schools and gymnasiums.
The hurricane has already reached the busy diving destination of Cozumel, just off the mainland, where hundreds of travellers have been forced to try and ride out the storm.
Speaking in an address to the country, Mexican President Vicente Fox said: "The most important thing now ... is to protect lives, protect the lives of our children, of our grandparents. Possessions can be replaced."
It is not the first time during this hurricane season that Mexico will be affected, but with winds reaching 150 mph it could be the most devastating.
