08 May 2007  Millions of Brits 'lose luggage at airports'
Holidaymakers anticipating the ritual wait at the airport conveyor belt this year could face a "nightmare" scenario, it has been claimed, as millions are affected each year by lost luggage.

Research from swiftcover.com reveals that 22 per cent of travellers are inconvenienced by lost baggage at airports every year, while 55 per cent of these travellers are forced to wait over one full day for their bags to be recovered.

A further six per cent of affected travellers did not recover their luggage from the airline by the end of the holiday, with some being informed that their possessions were lost indefinitely.

The company advises travellers to make sure that cash and jewellery is not packed as part of their checked-in baggage, as it may not be protected by their travel insurance policy.

Craig Staniland, director of underwriting at the firm, said: "As long as you have adequate travel insurance, losing your suitcase should not hit you in the pocket.

"For the majority of people, it's often the sentimental value of personal belongings and the lost time on holiday trying to locate your bags that cannot be replaced."

Last summer, moneysupermarket.com advised festival-goers to leave expensive items of clothing and jewellery at home and to consider taking a disposable camera in preference to risking damage to an expensive digital model.
