30 January 2008 Mobile phones 'crucial for gap year travel'
Mobile phones are an indispensable accessory for today's backpacking travellers, it has been reported.
According to AA Travel Insurance, the average backpacker now carries more than £450 worth of goods in their rucksacks.
Moreover, 73 per cent of gap year travellers cited their mobile phone to be an "essential" item while backpacking, while a further 72 per cent claimed they could not do without their digital cameras while travelling.
Christian Young, head of AA Travel Insurance, noted: "It's understandable that modern travellers want to be able to stay in touch and be able to record memories of the people and places they see."
However he added that travellers should ensure that such items are well protected.
The Telegraph recently reported that Thailand has developed new "beach huts for the billionaire backpacker" which come complete with pools, steam rooms and gyms.
