12 October 2006 Money saving advice given to travellers
Holidaymakers heading abroad this winter already adding up the cost of flights, accommodation and spending money, may be able to take advantage of new money saving tips offered by a discount travel website.
Travellers taking a second annual holiday, have been advised to book their travel at off-peak times, such as the first two weeks of November.
Other advice offered includes booking flights on Christmas or New Year's Day itself, when fares will be lower than the directly preceding days.
Barbara Messing, vice president and travel expert at Hotwire.com, advised that the greatest savings can be made in being flexible in your chosen holiday dates and booking early.
"There will be few last-minute deals on airfares, so start looking now and if the price is right don't hesitate," she said.
"Also, be open to travelling on different dates; by leaving a few days earlier or departing later you may be able to find a lower airfare," she added.
A survey by AXA this week revealed that Britons spent £4.2 billion this year on protecting their holiday, as part of a £97.3 billion total spend on holidays.
