12 February 2008 New Ryanair base in Barcelona
Ryanair has announced that it is to open a further base in Spain this autumn.
From October 2008, the budget airline will open its new base in Reus Barcelona, the 26th in Europe and the company's fifth Spanish hub.
Currently, Ryanair operates bases in Dublin, Frankfurt, Glasgow, Liverpool and London Luton and London Stansted.
From June 2008, a new Birmingham base will be active which will be followed by new bases opening in Palma, Paris, Santander, Santiago, Seveille and Barcelona this October.
"We congratulate Reus for fighting off stiff competition from seven other airports across Europe to win this new base which guarantees over one million [annual] passengers and two new aircraft," commented chief executive officer Michael O'Leary.
He added that the region has a "massive" untapped tourism potential.
