17 February 2006 New York blizzard causes transport havoc
The extent of the disruption caused by the largest snowstorm in New York's history is now becoming clear, with widespread cancellations and delays following Sunday's "white out" blizzard.
A record 26.9 inches paralysed international airports, which are still in the process of rescheduling cancelled flights.
Several hundred passengers were left completely stranded on Long Island railway lines after four trains stalled, whilst commuters had to negotiate four-foot high snowdrifts on icy pavements on their way to work this week.
"New York City has just experienced the biggest blizzard in its history," said the city's mayor Michael Bloomberg, before urging commuters to use "mass transit".
The storm was the largest since 26 inches fell in New York in 1947, but meteorologists warn that extreme weather events like this week's will continue to occur, possibly more frequently.
