16 October 2007 New York 'will be popular for Christmas shopping'
New York will retain its crown of being the most popular destination for Christmas shopping, it has been revealed.
According to Sean Tipton, spokesperson for the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), New York is a perennially popular shopping destination for those looking to stock up on Christmas bargains.
However, he added that Germany and eastern Europe are also popular destinations at this time of year - both for gift buying and cultural reasons.
"Quite apart from the exchange rate being very healthy at the moment, America is considerably cheaper than the UK in terms of going shopping, particularly for electrical goods and clothes," Mr Tipton commented.
He added that: "Christmas markets are getting more and more popular, partly for the Christmas experience as much as what people buy when they get there."
It was recently reported by ABTA that more long-haul destinations such as New York are popular for short shopping breaks.
