07 October 2006 New passports to have
Holidaymakers who need to purchase a new passport are being advised that the introduction of biometric passports will not have a major effect on their travel plans.
A spokesperson for the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) told BBC News 24 new passports, that include a chip containing the owner's biometric data "shouldn't make an awful lot of difference at all to travellers".
Dee Bryne told the channel: "They will be able to apply for a passport in exactly the same way as before.
"The recommended amount of time is still about the same, four to six weeks and all they will see at the end is a slightly new type of passport, a slightly different passport."
In July this year, Halifax reported that Britons had £2.7 billion worth of possessions stolen last year, including passports, with £1.5 billion of property not adequately covered.
