14 May 2007 'New trend' towards travel retreats for women
An outdoor adventure firm based in Canada has reported a shift in travel trends, with increasing numbers of women opting to holiday in wilderness retreats, while the amount of those on sport adventure trips is remaining steady.
Wild Women Expeditions reports that sales of its retreat holidays have increased by 50 per cent over the figures for 2006, with an increasing number of visits to the firm's website being driven by searches for retreats.
The company speculates that this trend could be a result of workers in high-intensity workplaces potentially feeling unfulfilled and consequently looking towards these types of break as a means of attaining personal and spiritual growth.
"The typical adventure traveller is not a 28 year old male but a 47 year old woman," said Marybeth Bond, author of Gutsy Women, quoted the firm.
In March 2005, Standard Life reported that 87 per cent of Britons seek some form of self-discovery and adventure from their holiday.
