14 September 2005 North Carolina braces itself for Ophelia
Hurricane Ophelia, which formed off the coast of Florida last week, has caused islands situated off the US Atlantic coast to be evacuated.
The hurricane is slowly making its way towards North Carolina, and some schools on the mainland were closed down in anticipation of the storms to come, hoping that damage on the scale of New Orleans will be avoided.
The National Hurricane Center believes that the hurricane could cause problems as it is slow moving, meaning that heavy rainfall could settle over land for longer periods, increasing the risk of severe flooding.
Windspeeds have only got up to approximately 70 miles per hour, so it not yet classified as a hurricane, but it is predicted to strengthen as it approaches the coastline.
