02 August 2007 'Not just the elite' on city breaks
The prevalence of cheaper flights to an ever-increasing number of holiday destinations has widened the access to city breaks, it has been claimed, resulting in an increase in their popularity, with short breaks becoming a preserve of the many, rather than the few.
Online travel agency Holidays-Direct has reported that people from all types of background and profession are now taking advantage of low-cost air fares to head to the continent for a short break.
Neil Smillie, head of Holidays-Direct, said: "The popularity of city breaks continues to rise as more departures are made available at regional airports by the low-cost carriers."
He added that holidaymakers are also shifting away from having a single one or two week holiday abroad every year and are instead getting extra time overseas with frequent city breaks.
In January 2007, Yorkshire Bank warned that a third of Britons planning a weekend break to the European continent will neglect to take out adequate travel insurance for their trip.
