20 September 2007 Nottingham East Midlands 'attracts largest proportion of leisure passengers'
A new survey conducted by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has revealed that in 2006 88 per cent of Nottingham East Midlands' clientele were leisure passengers.
According to the CAA this figure represents the largest proportion of leisure passengers, compared with 87 per cent for Londonderry and 83 per cent at Gatwick.
The study also suggests that air travel is becoming a more popular choice among UK holidaymakers.
"CAA airport statistics show that the number of travellers using UK regional airports continues to grow. Last year, 98 million passengers (42 per cent of the total) flew from a regional airport compared with 95 million in 2005," the CAA noted.
This growth represents a four per cent increase in travellers.
Meanwhile UK travellers are increasingly flying from London-based airports - 137 million passengers flew from either Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton or London City in 2006compared with 132 million in 2005.
London Heathrow is the UK's busiest airport and flies to more than 180 destinations in over 90 countries.
