18 April 2007 One in four gap-year travellers 'have bad experience'
Britons heading abroad on a year out may want to ensure they are covered by a comprehensive gap year travel insurance policy as they are warned that a quarter of "gappers" experience a negative experience at some point on their travels.
The Foreign Office reports that a quarter of British gap-year travellers have a bad experience of some sort abroad, while the government department has recently launched a promotional website to advise travellers heading off for a year overseas.
American Express reports that standard travel insurance policies will often not be sufficient for gap-year travellers, with backpackers requiring specialised full-year travel insurance for their trip.
Joanne Field, marketing manager at the firm, said: "A good, comprehensive policy with a 24-hour helpline can be invaluable - not just in a medical emergency but in a variety of situations."
She added that while purchasing travel cover is not the most exciting part of planning a year abroad, it may well be one of the most essential.
The GoGapYear website from the Foreign Office recommends Ethiopia as a top destination for Britons taking a year out.
