22 October 2007 Optimism among gap year travellers
Students planning on taking time out from their studies to travel overseas are optimistic about the prospect of repaying their debts upon their return, it has been claimed.
According to Tom Griffiths of gapyear.com, those who are planning on returning to university are better at budgeting and repaying their arrears.
He added that while there are inevitably instances of people overspending, however those who do so "come back with a view to paying it off".
"The guys who are about to go off to university tend to be a bit better on the budgets, because they know that they've got to go to university. They tend to spend what they earn," commented Mr Griffiths.
He added that "the bank of mum and dad" provides an overdraft facility in a number of instances.
According to gapyear.com, 230,000 people take a gap year between the ages of 18 and 24.
