02 August 2007 Passenger health 'a top priority' for airline
A leading airline has maintained that despite the lack of any proven link between deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and flying, the health and safety of its passengers remains a number one priority.
Virgin Atlantic reports that, at present, the medical evidence of a link between flying and the contraction of DVT is occasionally contradictory, but has urged continued research into the condition.
The airline notes the presence of first aid equipment on board its craft and the necessary training of staff, while advising passengers to inform its special assistance department of any pre-existing medical condition ahead of travel.
A spokesperson for the firm said: "The health, well being and safety of our passengers and crew is Virgin Atlantic's highest priority."
She added that health information is provided online for passengers, while it also offers information on a leaflet and through an onboard exercise video.
In 2004, American Express reported that 72 per cent of women take the recommended exercises that could prevent DVT in-flight, compared to 56 per cent of men.
