28 February 2006 Passengers delayed after motorway lorry fire
Travellers heading to Stansted Airport were severely delayed after a lorry fire forced the closure of a busy section of the M11 on Saturday.
Hundreds of passengers missed flights due to the accident, which left many stuck in traffic for up to four hours.
The road forms an important link between the Essex airport and London, with the situation made worse by an increasing number choosing to drive due to engineering works on the Stansted Express train service.
Firefighters closed the M11 between junctions six and seven in both directions as they sought to tackle the potentially explosive lorry fire.
Passengers without any insurance cover were particularly inconvenienced as many were forced to rebook on to other flights by the time they reached the airport.
A spokesman for the airport commented on Saturday: "We have still got passengers turning up late and missing their flights, and they are queuing up at the ticket desks to get rebooked on later flights.
"It is disappointing that people are missing flights, but the airlines are doing their best to get them to their destinations."
