02 February 2006 Passengers suffer delays due to airport protests
Passengers travelling to and from India have complained of delays and a deterioration of service as employees protest about the proposed privatisation of the country's biggest airports.
Roughly two dozen policemen in riot gear have assembled outside the airport terminal as passengers hurried to enter the building.
"More than 90 per cent of the total employees of Mumbai [Airport] are participating in the strike," union leader Nitin Jadhav told the Press Trust of India.
Although no flights have been cancelled as yet, New Delhi Airport - India's second busiest - is expecting delays throughout the day.
Passengers have suffered from delayed landings, problems finding trolleys for their luggage and unclean airport toilets.
The BBC reports that at Mumbai Airport striking workers blocked exit routes, delaying passengers.
Around 200 employees working for the Airports Authority of India are against the government's plans to modernise the airports in New Delhi and Mumbai; the work for which has been awarded to a consortium including private and overseas companies.
