05 May 2006 Passport to the World Cup action
Football fans travelling to Germany for the world cup this year are being advised to check their passports are valid too.
The Identity and Passport Service (IPS) are warning football fans, and any other travellers this summer, who need to renew or apply to do so in good time or they may be left at home.
It is estimated that thousands of supporters will flock to Germany this summer to support England so those putting in passport applications or renewing passports could find themselves on a long waiting list.
Former chair of fans' organisation Supporters Direct and Home Office Minister Andy Burnham, said: "We are urging all England supporters to check now that their passports are fully up to date and ensure they leave enough time to apply for new documents before travelling.
"If you do not have a valid passport you won’t be able to travel, and the last thing we want is for fans to miss out on the biggest sporting event of the year."
The first match of the 2006 Fifa World Cup kicks off on June 9th in Munich at 18:00 local time between Germany and Costa Rica.
