14 December 2007 Pirate ship wreckage found off Dominican Republic
Remnants of a pirate ship have been located off the coast of a small Dominican Republic island.
The wreckage is believed to be that of the Quedagh Merchant - a ship that once belonged to notorious brigand William Kidd.
Historians think that Kidd captured the vessel which was likely to have contained treasure including silks and gold, however he abandoned the ship in order to clear his name of criminal charges in New York.
"I look forward to a meticulous study of the ship, its age, its armament, its construction, its use, its contents and the reconstructed wrecking process that resulted in the site we see today," commented Charles Beeker, a scuba-diving archaeologist from Indiana University.
Mr Beeker added that he could not believe it had been missed for 300 years and that it had been left untouched by looters.
