24 September 2005 Plane drama unfolds on TV
Passengers on a flight that experienced technical troubles after take-off watched in horror as the emergency situation was broadcast on their in-flight TVs.
The surreal situation developed shortly after the Jet Blue flight 292 took off from Burbank's Bob Hope airport in California.
The pilots realised that there was a problem with the landing gear, and rather than continue with their flight to New York, were forced to divert to Los Angeles airport instead.
The Airbus A320 was forced to circle in the air for three hours to lose fuel before it could attempt to make an emergency landing.
All the while, the 146 passengers were glued to the TV screens on the backs of the seats in front of them, as news networks ran with the unfolding drama.
On the runway, hundreds of firefighters and many ambulances waited for the landing.
Thankfully, the pilots were able to execute a safe landing and all the passengers were able to leave the aircraft unharmed.
